![]() If the stock has a swivel on the front barrel band and doesn't have a flat spring on the right side retaining the solid band, it is a cut-down rifle. If the barrel has a band-type front sight like a 03 Springfield, then in is a cut-down rifle. The front sight on a rifle or carbine will be a ramp integral with the barrel (actually it is silver soldered in place but the seam is very faint.) The 1899 will not have a sling bar on the left side of the stock behind the action. Correct carbine rear sights can sell for over $300.ġ899 receivers were only used for carbines. ![]() (A rear sight for a carbine, no matter what model, will have a 'C' stamped in at least two places, on the side and at the top of the slider above the yardage graduation marks.) A carbine rear sight can sometimes be worth more then the rifle. If it is a real 1899 carbine then it is worth over $1000 in complete unaltered condition.Ī rifle cut down to look like a carbine is worth about $250 in decent shape. ![]()
